Magnitude released!

Originally written in 1996 for the album Gyroscope. This song has always been a favorite because of the playful nature of the lyrics, and the driving groove. The 1996 version was recorded using a sequenced sample of my Ibanez bass, The Purple Master. The bass line was written and recorded using that sample; I never actually learned how to play the line. I just thought I’d figure it out later. Never would I have guessed that it would take 23 years before I finally sat down and learned the part!

I Have Said Words released!

Until the very last minute, this song had been titled “Boris Would Understand” because of its origins as an homage to Boris Blank and Yello, who have been a fundamental part of my musical ecosystem for most of my life. When it came time to publish, however, I conceded that this song really needed to be named “I Have Said Words“, as it is the primary lyric. It stung a bit to give up the original title. The song is a nonsensical, Alice-In-Wonderland-type journey through strange electronica environments. Currently, I’m planning for it to be the last track on Marbles Considered Lost. So cool.

Cabin In The Woods Released!

I had a great time collaborating with Don Weigand on Cabin In The Woods. What a blast. The cabin referenced in the song was actually located a short distance behind my childhood home. Don and I began writing songs in that home. Here is an actual photo taken by Don of my shoes hanging down through the roof while I sit on the chimney top in the winter (circa 1987) . Studio Update – Magnitude

When this song was originally written, back around 1995, I was so excited by the chunky power of the arrangement. I knew that it was going to be tricky to reproduce. Pulling together the new version has been a slow evolution. The song rests upon two main pillars; the lead vocal and the bass guitar. The bass was finalized last month after 3-4 weeks of rehearsing. The vocals are coming together now — a great line, the lyrics are a cool play on words. Recorded last weekend, I’ve been hard at work on the editing. When that is done, all that remains are the vocal harmonies — not too major of a task. Probably two weeks left before heading into the final mixing stages. Overall, I love it. The new recordings are powerful and colorful. Purple Master sounds amazing; this bass line is fantastic.

Studio Update – Boris Would Understand

Progress on the album, Marbles Considered Lost, has been fantastic! There are five separate projects in motion. I’m currently wrapping up the final touches on this instrumental: Boris Would Understand (referencing Boris Blank of Yello). A strange and wonderful song with plenty of twists and turns. I’m expecting to publish Boris along with Cabin In The Woods sometime in the next two weeks. The other projects in motion are: Magnitude (80% complete); a new version of an old song from the 1997 album Gyroscope, Monster (40% complete); a rock-driven story-style song, and The Cinderblock Boy (25% complete); a slow, emotional song about heartache.

Studio Update – Cabin In The Woods

I’m nearing the completion of the vocal recordings now. Excited to be heading into final production soon. This song has come together really well; great groove. An awesome way to kick off the new album. I’ll be working on a final mix over the next couple days. Don and I are finishing up a bridge/solo section, but after that it should be complete. More to come soon.

Studio Update – Marbles Considered Lost

The next chapter begins.

After a short period of downtime, I’ve been busy developing my next project. It is tentatively called, “Marbles Considered Lost“. A sarcastic jab at how crazy it is for me to be recording music that no one hears. I am currently wrapping up the guitars on the first song, “Cabin in the Woods”. It is a lighthearted daydream about visiting an abandoned cabin that I used to play in as a kid. The song is around 70% complete. I’ve also been assembling an instrumental called, “Boris Would Understand”, and re-building the sequencing for “Magnitude”, an old song from Gyroscope. A lot of things in motion.

I’ve also re-connected with my very best friend, and long-time writing partner, Don. I’m looking forward to his input and collaboration. This is going to be fun!

Studio Update – Phobiac

Due to a weird convergence of timelines, I ended up recording the final lead vocals for both Phobiac and One By One on the same day (Sunday 03/25).  I don’t think that has ever happened before.  Usually there are several months between lead vocal recordings.  And I like them!  Crazy.  I guess it was one of those days when it all just flows.  Both songs have quite a heavy load of background vocals scheduled.  So there is still a lot of work ahead of me.

(these songs are killer)

Studio Update – One By One

Massive progress on One By One.  I wrote and recorded a bass line that is just killer.  Can’t get it out of my head.  It really adds another dimension to the song; almost stealing the show from the acoustic guitar.  I just can’t believe this song is coming together so nicely.  I’d been kicking it around for so many years that I never thought it would solidify.  Phobiac has been on hold for a couple weeks.  I have the final guitar and bass recorded, but haven’t been able to get much further with the vocals.  No real issues, just a lack of free time.

Please help me out by spreading the word about The Jason Fables music.

Studio Update – Phobiac

I’m down to the last three songs before The Reluctant Cannonball is complete; Phobiac, The Cannonball and One By One.  I’m furthest along with Phobiac.  It isn’t a complicated song, but it will require a high degree of precision.  The last few weeks have been spent rehearsing the guitars.  Man, do I love this bass line.  Go Purple Master!  The other two songs are still in the composing stages.  The Cannonball is intended to be a quirky weird song that will open the album, similar in function to The Circular Disk of the Earth, or Technical Difficulties.  One by One is a very old song that I’ve never recorded.  I’ve been using it as a warm up exercise for guitar, especially acoustic, for ten to fifteen years.  The song was an attempt to intentionally write a very dark, sad song.  Recently, I added some percussion and synth.  It was really odd to hear this song in another format other than live guitar/vocals.  Exciting.
