Studio Update – The Richest Man

Found two great synth pads a couple of days ago.  All of a sudden, the trajectory of this song has changed significantly.  It’s sounding more open and lavish.  I may not need many other instruments or vocals for this one.  If that holds true, I am much further along than I thought.  I need to get to work on cover artwork.

I think all tracks are recorded now.  However, I’m not yet convinced these last background vocal tracks are good enough.  We’ll see if they grow on me.  The overall song mix is in a pretty good place.  Usually there are tons of tweeks to make once the final tracks are down, but this recording is already close.  I didn’t expect this song to come out quite so sad.

I started into the video today.  The first few shots are in position.  When I went running along the river this afternoon I found a cool place to film myself singing the lyrics.  It would have a small waterfall as a backdrop.  Maybe next weekend.

Today I worked out the full basic song arrangement for The Richest Man.  I also finished up writing the main lyrics.   Up until now, this song has only been played live singing with an acoustic guitar (Mr. Burns).  Having the basic melody and chords recorded will give me something to build on.  I have a long way to go, and solidifying the arrangement was the first step.

Very productive weekend.  All guitars are now final!  So excited.  In addition to that, I knocked out the final lead vocal track.  I thought I would be working on that for a few more weeks.  All that’s left now is to record the final background vocals and some post-production polishing.  Piece of cake.

Acoustic guitars are final.  Their natural sound compliments well the gritty compression on the bass.  This guitar is called, Mr. Burns.  I’ve continued to develop the sax solo and it has become super cool; stealing the bridge away from the background vocals.  I’m currently developing the last guitar part, a bouncing electric sound that duplicates the acoustic guitar at times.  The plan for the weekend is to start thumbing through my GoPro footage in order to develop a plan for this song’s video.

Great weekend.  The brass instrument I chose for the bridge solo was a saxaphone.  I got it out of the Kontakt factory library.  Amazingly expressive.  Final bass guitar recorded as well.  Using my good old Ibanez; aptly named The Purple Master.  A few minutes ago I recorded 10 takes of acoustic guitar.  They might end up being the final versions.  Won’t know until I roll up the sleeves and start editing.

04/08/16 — rounded out the general arrangement through the end of the song yesterday.  I need one more instrument to solo during a long bridge section.  Considering some type of brass.  Gearing up for some final recordings this weekend.

04/05/16 — came up with a killer guitar part to feature in the last third of the song.  Tough to play.  I’m using my Les Paul, named Xeelee, for this one.   “I’ve got blisters on my fingers!”, Ringo.

04/03/16 — I’ve been making great progress on this song.  Around 50% complete.  Very excited about the developing background vocals and organ part.
