Studio Update – The Reluctant Cannonball

I’ve been out of communication for quite a while now, tied up by…Life…and Death.  And still, despite all the challenges, progress and success with the album.  My 4 year saga.  So, to the update: Phobiac is done (more info soon), One By One is entering the final mastering sessions, and The Cannonball is fully recorded and in the early mixing stage.  The album is assembled; complete with my usual ‘continuous play’ additions between the songs.  The iTunes digital booklet is done.  Lots of website updates ahead.  Here is the final song order:

  1. The Cannonball
  2. It Sounds of the Winter
  3. Behind Blast Defenses
  4. Baring Lake
  5. Puzzled by Tricks and Lies
  6. Angry Tank Maneuvers
  7. Phobiac
  8. Ashley Payne
  9. The Richest Man
  10. Sandstone Fossil Fear
  11. One By One

Studio Update – Phobiac

Due to a weird convergence of timelines, I ended up recording the final lead vocals for both Phobiac and One By One on the same day (Sunday 03/25).  I don’t think that has ever happened before.  Usually there are several months between lead vocal recordings.  And I like them!  Crazy.  I guess it was one of those days when it all just flows.  Both songs have quite a heavy load of background vocals scheduled.  So there is still a lot of work ahead of me.

(these songs are killer)

Studio Update – One By One

Massive progress on One By One.  I wrote and recorded a bass line that is just killer.  Can’t get it out of my head.  It really adds another dimension to the song; almost stealing the show from the acoustic guitar.  I just can’t believe this song is coming together so nicely.  I’d been kicking it around for so many years that I never thought it would solidify.  Phobiac has been on hold for a couple weeks.  I have the final guitar and bass recorded, but haven’t been able to get much further with the vocals.  No real issues, just a lack of free time.

Studio Update – Phobiac

I’m down to the last three songs before The Reluctant Cannonball is complete; Phobiac, The Cannonball and One By One.  I’m furthest along with Phobiac.  It isn’t a complicated song, but it will require a high degree of precision.  The last few weeks have been spent rehearsing the guitars.  Man, do I love this bass line.  Go Purple Master!  The other two songs are still in the composing stages.  The Cannonball is intended to be a quirky weird song that will open the album, similar in function to The Circular Disk of the Earth, or Technical Difficulties.  One by One is a very old song that I’ve never recorded.  I’ve been using it as a warm up exercise for guitar, especially acoustic, for ten to fifteen years.  The song was an attempt to intentionally write a very dark, sad song.  Recently, I added some percussion and synth.  It was really odd to hear this song in another format other than live guitar/vocals.  Exciting.

Studio Update – Puzzled By Tricks and Lies

I’m well into this song.  What began as an attempt to create a quiet song has twisted into having more of a jazz club sound.  The chorus asks; “If I swapped a copy of you, 1-for-1 with everyone in the world,  would it be a better place?  Or would it all crumble and decay?”  The bass guitar is a fantastic digital emulator (Halion Sonic SE) of an upright.  I’m in love.  This last weekend I recorded a final version of the lead guitar (Yang).  I’m super excited by the song’s smooth groove.  Great atmosphere.  I need to fill in the background vocals in the chorus, but have very little else to record.  I’m hoping to get into post-production soon.  Side note: I’ve taken a few steps towards re-recording the song Phobiac (from the album, “Gyroscope“).  I had planned to work on Signing The Scripture, but am too intimidated by the scope of work it would take.
